Legal fight looms over a famed ‘Ambalappuzha Palpayasom’

Travancore Devaswom Board comes out against bakery for ‘misusing’ name of Ambalappuzha Palpayasom

The Travancore Devaswom Board (TDB) will initiate legal proceedings against Jolly Food Products and Thomson Bakery based at Kadapra in Thiruvalla taluk for misusing the name of Ambalappuzha Palpayasom, a prime offering at the Sree Krishna temple at Ambalappuzha, board president A. Padmakumar has said.

In a statement here on Wednesday, the TDB chief said that for the past many days, Jolly Foods had been selling a sweet labelled Ambalappuzha Palpayasom through Thomson Bakery, which was owned by it.

According to Mr. Padmakumar, on receiving complaints in this regard, the TDB officials attached to the Ambalappuzha Sree Krishna temple inquired into the matter. The product was sold to the officials on payment of Rs 175 for a packet of 500 ml, the statement said.

‘Via TDB counters alone’

A photograph of the ‘palpayasom’ box shows the product name printed on its lid as ‘AMBLPZHA PALPAYASAM.’ The Ambalappuzha Palpayasom is prepared at the Sree Krishna temple at Ambalappuzha and sold through devaswom counters alone as prasadom, after offering it to the deity, Mr. Padmakumar said.

TDB action

The deputy devaswom commissioner at Haripad has been directed to initiate legal action against the bakery owners for misusing the name of the ‘palpayasom’ and misleading devotees, Mr. Padmakumar said. The deputy commissioner has already filed a complaint with the police, the statement said.
