The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecasted extremely heavy rainfall in Kerala in the coming days, prompting a red alert in several districts. This alert is a warning for residents to prepare for potential severe weather conditions.

Red Alert Districts: May 19 and 20

Pathanamthitta, Kottayam, and Idukki districts are under a red alert for May 19 and 20. This level of alert signifies that these areas may experience over 20 cm of rain within 24 hours, posing significant risks of flooding and disruptions.

Orange Alerts for Widespread Heavy Rain

In addition to the red alert districts, the IMD has issued an orange alert for Thiruvananthapuram, Kollam, Alappuzha, and Ernakulam on these dates. An orange alert indicates very heavy rainfall, ranging from 6 cm to 20 cm, which can also lead to hazardous conditions.

Continued Alerts and Thunderstorm Warnings

Looking ahead to May 21, the IMD has extended the orange alert to nine more districts, cautioning that some areas might experience rainfall levels comparable to a red alert. Furthermore, the department predicts thunderstorms with lightning and gusty winds in isolated locations across Kerala from May 19 to 22.

For May 18, an orange alert has already been issued for Pathanamthitta, Idukki, and Malappuram districts, underscoring the severity of the expected weather.

Understanding the Alerts

  • Red Alert: Indicates extremely heavy rain of over 20 cm in 24 hours.
  • Orange Alert: Signifies very heavy rain, between 6 cm and 20 cm.
  • Yellow Alert: Denotes heavy rain, from 6 cm to 11 cm.

The IMD’s warning comes as a result of strong westerly and southwesterly winds predicted to prevail in the region, potentially causing significant rainfall.

Residents in the affected areas are advised to stay updated with weather forecasts, take necessary precautions, and be prepared for possible emergency situations.
