Debate on Education Standards Reignited by Pinarayi Vijayan’s Remarks

Thiruvananthapuram: Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan’s recent remarks on the educational standards in Kerala have sparked renewed discussions on the quality of school education in the state, particularly in English, science, and mathematics.

Speaking at the ‘Mikavu’ programme organized by the Kerala School Teachers’ Association (KSTA), Chief Minister Vijayan acknowledged Kerala’s reputation for excellent general education. However, he pointed out that students often do not perform as well in subjects like science and mathematics.

Highlighting the importance of Malayalam as the primary medium of instruction, Vijayan stressed the need for students to gain proficiency in English by the time they complete primary education.

This statement comes in the wake of Education Minister Saji Cheriyan’s recent controversy regarding the literacy levels of students passing the SSLC examination, which was subsequently refuted by General Education Minister V Sivankutty, emphasizing Kerala’s educational quality compared to other states.

KSTA State President K Badarunnisa welcomed Vijayan’s remarks, citing ongoing efforts under the ‘Mikavu’ student support programme to enhance language skills, arithmetic, and basic science among students. “The TWINKLE section under the Mikavu project focuses specifically on improving English standards among primary students, with additional initiatives at the secondary level,” she explained.

Vijayan also emphasized the government’s commitment to ensuring that all SSLC graduates possess essential competencies. His statement hints at potential reforms, including the introduction of minimum marks criteria in SSLC theory exams to uphold academic standards.

Activist M Shajarkhan in the education sector expressed support for these measures, underlining the importance of students achieving core competencies at each educational stage.

The debate continues as Kerala aims to further enhance its educational framework, ensuring students are well-equipped for future challenges.
