GI-Tagged Wayanad Robusta Coffee Gets National Recognition

Wayanad, Kerala Wayanad Robusta Coffee, one of Kerala’s most distinctive agricultural products, has earned national recognition after being awarded a Geographical Indication (GI) tag, boosting its profile in both domestic and international markets.

The GI tag, granted by the Geographical Indications Registry of India, officially recognizes the unique quality, reputation, and characteristics of Wayanad Robusta coffee, grown in the lush highlands of Kerala’s Wayanad district. The recognition has placed this rich, bold variety of Robusta on the national coffee map alongside elite Indian coffee varieties like Coorg Arabica and Chikmagalur Coffee.

“This is a proud moment for the farmers of Wayanad and the coffee-growing community of Kerala. The GI tag will protect the identity of Wayanad Robusta and open new opportunities in specialty coffee markets,” said an official from the Coffee Board of India.

What Makes Wayanad Robusta Coffee Unique?

Grown at elevations between 700 and 1200 meters, Wayanad Robusta coffee is known for its dense body, low acidity, and strong flavor profile. The beans thrive in the region’s cool climate, rich soil, and traditional organic farming practices, which contribute to its distinct taste and aroma.

Boost for Farmers and Local Economy

The GI tag not only safeguards Wayanad Robusta from imitation but also enhances its market value, creating new avenues for export and branding. This recognition is expected to directly benefit thousands of small and marginal farmers in Wayanad, many of whom rely on coffee cultivation as their primary livelihood.

“The GI recognition will help us build a premium identity for our coffee. It’s not just a win for Wayanad—it’s a win for Indian Robusta,” said a local grower.

Expanding India’s Specialty Coffee Footprint

India, traditionally known for producing commercial-grade Robusta and Arabica beans, is gaining traction in the global specialty coffee market. With GI tags already awarded to several regional coffees, Wayanad Robusta joins the ranks of India’s finest.

This milestone also aligns with the broader push by the Indian government to promote GI-tagged agricultural products as part of the Atmanirbhar Bharat (Self-Reliant India) initiative.
