The Central team takes stock of situation at the bund breach area at Kanakassery on Tuesday.

Alappuzha: A central team took stock of the post-flood situation in the district on Tuesday.

They visited bund breach sites of Kanakkassery and met farmers and workers at Cherukayal, Valiyathuruthu, Marthandam Kayal and C-Block and sea-erosion hit coastal hamlets of Ambalappuzha and Cherthala. According to the district administration, the district has lost paddy crops in 5524.469 hectares, 1051.96 hectares of them after 19 bunds across ten panchayats breached.

Ten transformers were destroyed and 459-kilometre electricity lines damaged. Twenty-one boats were destroyed and 40 got damaged, while fishers lost 412 fishing nets.

The floods destroyed three houses and damaged 139 others in Cherthala taluk while ten houses were washed away and 105 destroyed partially in Ambalappuzha.

In Cherthala, 21 relief centres accommodated 5,764 people while in Ambalappuzha 2,035 people stayed in 13 camps.

Fourteen villages suffered from waterlogging in Kuttanad taluk, destroying seven houses and damaging 138, displacing 1,035 families into 13 camps. Local authorities opened 641 gruel centres during this period.

In Karthikappally one house lost completely while 57 collapsed partially as nine villages were inundated, throwing out 3,060 people into 36 camps.

In Mavelikara, 11 villages were hit, one house lost completely and 18 damaged.

Sixteen camps were opened to relocate 829 families.

In Chengannur 11 villages were affected resulting in complete loss of six houses and 50 partially, displacing 1384 families into 41 camps.

District collector Dr Adeela Abdulla  briefed the team.Dr Andrew Spencer of State Disaster Management Authority, sub-collector V.R. Krishna Teja, and deputy collector  S. Santhosh Kumar accompanied the team comprising H. R Meena (home) V. Mohan Murali (water resources) and V.V. Sastri (transport).
