Kozhikode, Sep 11: Kerala has reported its sixth death in a month from amoebic meningoencephalitis, a rare and often fatal infection caused by the brain-eating amoeba.
The latest case was confirmed on Thursday at Kozhikode Medical College Hospital, where the patient had been admitted in a critical condition. Health officials said the source of the infection remains unidentified.
Rising Toll Across Districts
Five other people, including children and adults, have died from the same infection in recent weeks. Most of the cases were reported in Malappuram and Kozhikode districts.
Currently, 10 patients remain under treatment at Kozhikode MCH for suspected amoebic infections.
How the Infection Spreads
Doctors warn that the brain-eating amoeba is found in:
- Stagnant water
- Freshwater lakes and rivers
- Soil and cesspools
Infection occurs when contaminated water enters through the nose and reaches the brain. The disease progresses quickly and is difficult to treat.
Health Advisory
Public health experts in Kerala have urged people to avoid swimming or bathing in stagnant or untreated freshwater sources. Awareness drives are underway across affected districts.
Doctors emphasize that early detection and immediate medical care are crucial to improving survival chances.
