Kerala Governor Moves Supreme Court Over VC Appointment Process

Thiruvananthapuram: Kerala Governor Rajendra Arlekar has moved the Supreme Court against Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan’s role in the appointment of Vice-Chancellors at the APJ Abdul Kalam Technological University (KTU) and the Kerala Digital University.

Governor’s Petition

The Governor requested that the search committee submit its shortlist of candidates directly to the Chancellor instead of routing it through the Chief Minister. He said this process would keep the appointments more transparent and aligned with university rules.

Background of the Dispute

Earlier, the Supreme Court directed the shortlist to be handed to the Chief Minister before reaching the Governor. Arlekar argued that Kerala’s case is different from West Bengal, where a similar system was applied, and sought a separate process for the state.

Ongoing Differences

The issue adds to the differences between the Governor and the state government on higher education matters. While the Governor raised concerns about political influence in appointments, the state maintains that the Chief Minister has a legal role in the process.

Universities in Focus

The case directly concerns KTU and Kerala Digital University, institutions seen as important for technical and digital education. Delay in appointments may affect their administration and academic functioning.

Next Step

The Supreme Court will review the Governor’s plea. Its decision could redefine the appointment process for Vice-Chancellors in Kerala.
