Supreme Court Declines Plea to Restrain Media Statements on Indian Nurse Nimisha Priya’s Yemen Case

New Delhi, August 25, 2025 – The Supreme Court of India on Monday refused to hear a plea seeking directions to restrain unverified public statements regarding the case of Indian nurse Nimisha Priya, who is on death row in Yemen.

Plea Details

The plea, filed by K A Paul, sought a complete media gag order to prevent individuals from making statements or publishing unverified information about Nimisha Priya. It also requested the government of India to take coordinated diplomatic measures with Yemen to commute her death sentence to life imprisonment.

The Supreme Court bench, comprising Justices Vikram Nath and Sandeep Mehta, asked the petitioner:

“What do you want? Do you want nobody should come out and say anything to media? The Attorney General has said that the government will ensure nobody briefs media. What else do you want?”

The matter was ultimately dismissed as withdrawn.

Government Response

Attorney General R Venkataramani stated that the case is highly sensitive and assured the court that the government would ensure no media briefings occur until the matter concludes.

Currently, delicate diplomatic negotiations are ongoing, and some individuals have been reportedly making false statements about the case.
