Thiruvananthapuram, Sep 11: Vizhinjam Port has received customs clearance for export-import (EXIM) cargo and domestic operations, marking a major step toward the port’s commercial launch.
The Customs and Central Excise Department under the Union Ministry of Finance issued the primary approval. The final clearance will come from the Commissionerate in Kochi once the remaining procedures are complete. The licence has been awarded to Adani Vizhinjam Port Company.
Customs Operations Begin
A customs office has already started functioning at the port utility building near the harbour. Cargo operations will be managed through approved companies once the port becomes fully operational.
Road Connectivity Delays Domestic Cargo
Although EXIM trade can begin soon, domestic cargo movement faces delays. Road connectivity from the port to the national highway is still incomplete. Authorities also need to widen service roads for container trucks.
Officials expect the road work to finish by December 2025. Until then, domestic exports cannot start on a full scale.
