New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to visit Mizoram and Manipur on September 13, according to officials in Aizawl who spoke to PTI.
Mizoram visit – driving connectivity and growth
PM Modi will begin his tour in Mizoram, where he will inaugurate the 51.38 km-long Bairabi-Sairang railway line. This project, launched under the Centre’s Act East Policy, aims to boost connectivity and accelerate economic growth in the Northeast.
The new line will connect Aizawl with Assam’s Silchar, enhancing access for trade, travel, and business opportunities across the region.
Manipur visit amid ongoing ethnic tensions
After completing his Mizoram engagements, PM Modi is expected to fly to Manipur. This trip would mark his first visit since ethnic violence erupted in May 2023. While Mizoram officials confirmed that preparations are underway, authorities in Imphal stated they had not yet received final confirmation.
Preparations in Aizawl
Mizoram Chief Secretary Khilli Ram Meena chaired a high-level review meeting on Monday to oversee readiness for the Prime Minister’s arrival. Officials discussed traffic management, security measures, and public reception. Authorities are preparing for large-scale participation from students, farmers, and government employees at the inauguration event in Aizawl.
Manipur’s fragile situation
PM Modi’s likely visit to Manipur comes at a critical time. The state has remained under President’s Rule since February 13, 2025, after former CM N. Biren Singh resigned. Since May 2023, clashes between the Meitei and Kuki-Zo communities have claimed over 60 lives, displaced thousands, and caused extensive property damage.
The Manipur Assembly, with a tenure until 2027, remains under suspended animation.
