Depression over Bay of Bengal: IMD Issues Yellow Alert in 9 Kerala Districts

Thiruvananthapuram: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a yellow alert across nine Kerala districts today, warning of heavy rain with strong winds due to a depression over the northwest Bay of Bengal near Odisha coast.

Districts Under Yellow Alert

The IMD said Idukki, Ernakulam, Thrissur, Palakkad, Malappuram, Kozhikode, Wayanad, Kannur, and Kasaragod are under alert. Isolated heavy rain (64.5 mm to 115.5 mm in 24 hours) is expected in these districts.

Rainfall and Wind Forecast

  • The depression may intensify in 48 hours, triggering moderate to heavy rain across Kerala for the next five days (August 26–29).
  • Strong winds with speeds of 40–50 kmph are likely in isolated areas till August 28.
  • In the next three hours, Kottayam, Idukki, Ernakulam, and Thrissur may receive moderate rain and gusty winds.
  • Pathanamthitta, Alappuzha, Palakkad, Malappuram, Kozhikode, Wayanad, Kannur, and Kasaragod may see light to moderate rainfall.

IMD’s Advisory        

Residents are advised to stay cautious of waterlogging, landslides, and flash floods in hilly and coastal areas. Fishermen have been warned against venturing into the sea due to rough conditions.
