PM Modi Opens Z-Morh Tunnel, Improving Access to Ladakh

Prime Minister Narendra Modi opened the Z-Morh tunnel in Sonmarg, Jammu and Kashmir, on Monday. He called the region the “crown of India” and shared his hope for it to become both “beautiful and prosperous.”

Remembering the Brave

The Prime Minister honored seven people, including workers, who died in a terror attack in October 2024. He praised the workers who faced tough conditions to finish the tunnel.

“First, I want to thank all the workers who risked their lives in very hard conditions for the development of the country and Jammu and Kashmir. Today, I also want to remember the seven workers who lost their lives,” PM Modi said.

PM Modi’s Connection to the Region

PM Modi talked about his personal bond with Jammu and Kashmir, sharing fond memories from his time spent working there. “I have known all of you for a long time. The kindness of the people of Jammu and Kashmir made us feel warm even during heavy snowfall,” he said, remembering his visits to places like Sonmarg, Gulmarg, and Baramulla.

About the Z-Morh Tunnel

The Z-Morh tunnel is a 6.5-kilometer-long project built on the important Srinagar-Leh National Highway. It cost ₹2,400 crore and is designed to provide year-round access to the Ladakh region, which is crucial for both locals and tourists.

Construction of the tunnel started in May 2015 and finished in 2024, with a “soft opening” in February 2024. The tunnel is expected to greatly improve the economy, tourism, and connectivity in the area.

A Plan for Growth

The Z-Morh tunnel shows India’s strong effort to build better infrastructure in important and difficult areas. By improving travel to Ladakh, the tunnel makes transportation easier and helps the social and economic growth of Jammu and Kashmir.

Prime Minister Modi ended the event by highlighting how important it is for the region to prosper. He also stressed the government’s commitment to bringing unity and development to Jammu and Kashmir.
