Prime Minister Narendra Modi emphasized India’s growing influence in global supply chains during the virtual inauguration of the Tuticorin International Container Terminal in Tamil Nadu. He highlighted the substantial ₹7,000 crore investment for the development of an Outer Harbour Container Terminal, which will enhance the capacity of the VO Chidambaranar Port (formerly Tuticorin Port).
Key Features of the New Terminal:
- Deep Draft: Over 14 meters.
- Berth Length: More than 300 meters.
- Impact: Expected to boost port capacity and reduce logistics costs.
The terminal’s launch marks a new chapter in India’s maritime development. Tamil Nadu, with its three major ports and 17 non-major ports, is becoming a significant maritime trade hub. The new container terminal is being hailed as a “new star” in India’s marine infrastructure.
PM Modi praised the terminal for its commitment to gender diversity, with 40% of its employees being women, showcasing a focus on women-led development in the maritime sector. He also noted that the VOC Port is recognized as a Green Hydrogen hub and a key port for offshore wind energy.
Emphasizing innovation and collaboration, PM Modi stated that these strengths will propel India towards becoming the world’s third-largest economy. He also highlighted Tamil Nadu’s crucial role in this growth and India’s extensive network of roadways, highways, waterways, and airways, which strengthens the nation’s position in global trade.
