On Thursday, Dharavi Redevelopment Project Pvt Ltd (DRPPL) conducted the Bhoomi Poojan, marking the start of the Dharavi redevelopment at the RPF grounds in Matunga. This ceremony initiates the construction of Railway staff quarters and offices, fulfilling the terms outlined in the redevelopment tender documents.
The state government’s door-to-door survey to identify eligible and ineligible residents is underway. This effort aims to expedite the redevelopment process and ensure inclusive development for all.
DRPPL, a joint venture between the state government and the Adani Group, aligns with Maharashtra’s goal of making Mumbai slum-free by 2030. The project will span approximately 600 acres and is expected to take seven years.
Eligible residents will receive 350-square-foot flats within the redevelopment area, while ineligible ones will be relocated within Mumbai. This approach ensures that everyone affected by the redevelopment will have housing options.
The redevelopment plan includes providing modern homes with essential amenities like kitchens, toilets, and access to quality infrastructure. The new homes will offer 17% more space compared to other slum rehabilitation projects in Mumbai.
Ineligible residents will be divided into two groups: those from January 1, 2000, to January 1, 2011, will have ownership options at affordable prices, while those post-2011 will be provided homes under a rental policy with a hire-purchase option.
New ultra-modern townships will be established for the ineligible residents, featuring schools, hospitals, gardens, and improved roads. Eligible industries and commercial entities will also be rehabilitated within Dharavi.
DRPPL is focused on protecting livelihoods and supporting businesses through improved infrastructure and skills development programs. Businesses will also benefit from SGST reimbursement for five years, aiding their growth and sustainability.
