Ajeet Singh Yadav wins silver in javelin throw at the Paris Paralympics 2024, overcoming a life-changing train accident.

Indian athlete Ajeet Singh Yadav achieved a remarkable feat by winning the silver medal in the javelin throw F46 final at the Paris Paralympics 2024. Late on Tuesday night, Yadav delivered a stunning performance, throwing 65.62 meters in the fifth round, surpassing his compatriot and world record holder Sundar Singh Gurjar, who had a throw of 64.96 meters.

This momentous victory comes as a significant milestone for Ajeet, who faced unimaginable challenges just seven years ago. At 23, Ajeet’s life was dramatically altered by a tragic train accident that cost him his left hand while he was trying to save his junior, Anshuman.

The accident occurred in 2017 when Ajeet, a research assistant at Laxmibai National Institute of Physical Education (LNIPE) in Gwalior, was returning from a marriage in Jabalpur. While attempting to fetch water at a station, he and Anshuman missed their train, the Kamayani Express, as it began to leave.

In a heroic act, Ajeet boarded the train to save Anshuman, who had fallen from the steps. Tragically, both fell from the moving train, and Ajeet’s left arm was caught under the wheels. Despite extensive medical treatment, he lost his arm below the elbow.

Anshuman recalls the incident with deep gratitude and emotional resonance. “Ajeet sir tried to save me and lost his arm in the process. Whenever I thank him, he asks me not to speak and hugs me. Now, as he returns with a silver medal, it’s my turn to hug him,” Anshuman shared.

Hailing from a village near Etawah in Uttar Pradesh, Ajeet had always been passionate about javelin throwing. The accident only fueled his determination and focus on the sport. His resilience and hard work have transformed his life, leading him from the depths of adversity to international success.

Four years after the accident, Ajeet competed in the Tokyo Paralympics, finishing in 8th place. Despite suffering an elbow injury, he made a triumphant return by winning the Para World title in Paris and a bronze medal at the Hangzhou Asian Games.

In 2024, Ajeet continued his impressive performance by claiming bronze at the world championships before clinching silver at the Paris Paralympics, showcasing his exceptional talent and perseverance.
